Sie ist sein Fenchel, er ihr Augapfel, Tantalus und Hamletchen. Fanny und Felix Mendelssohn sind das berühmteste Geschwisterpaar der Musikgeschichte, ihr Briefwechsel aus 25 Jahren lässt auf eine innige Geschwisterliebe schliessen.

«Fenchel! Geburtstagsfenchel, Cantorgesicht, Drude, Catomutter, lebe wohl. Bleibe mir gut, denk unser am frohen Tag und habe Dank, dass Du so bist, wie Du bist», sprudelt Felix am 39. Geburtstag seiner Schwester. Fanny pariert die Emphase, auch dann, wenn es ernst wird. «Vergiss nicht, dass Du meine rechte Hand und mein Augapfel dazu bist, dass es also ohne Dich auf keine Art mit der Musik rutschen will.»

Selten nah sind sie sich – auch in ihrer Begabung. Fanny, vier Jahre älter als Felix, spielt mit 13 Jahren alle Präludien aus dem ersten Band von Bachs Wohltemperiertem Klavier auswendig. Ihr «Fugenfinger» nützt ihr auch beim Komponieren: Sie lernt schnell. Carl Friedrich Zelter, Kompositionslehrer und Direktor der Singakademie Berlin, unterweist die beiden Wunderkinder im strengen Satz. Zelters Massstab sind Bach und Händel.

Fanny und Felix sind unzertrennlich, bis die ihnen zugeschriebenen Geschlechterrollen sich auswirken. Felix darf reisen, sie bleibt zu Hause. Felix darf Kompositionen veröffentlichen, sie schreibt für die Schublade. Felix tritt im Konzertsaal auf, sie musiziert im elterlichen Gartensaal und kuratiert die «Sonntagsmusiken», eine lange zurückreichende Tradition im Hause Mendelssohn. Der Vater fürchtet um Fannys Zukunft «Du musst dich ernster und emsiger zu Deinem eigentlichen Beruf, zum einzigen Beruf eines Mädchens, zur Hausfrau, bilden.» Fanny fügt sich, setzt jedoch die Heirat mit einem mittellosen Maler durch und ehelicht 1829 Wilhelm Hensel.

Die Bindung zwischen Fanny und Felix bleibt eng, der Austausch über die eigene Musik setzt sich fort. Fanny wird zur Ratgeberin, Felix zum jovialen Bruder. «Der Frauenzimmerpferdefuss guckt nirgends hervor», urteilt Felix über Fannys Kantaten und bittet sie im Gegenzug um die Korrekturen einer Reinschrift. Fanny mahnt, keine Note von seinem neuen Oratorium «Elias» zu kennen und schweigt ihrerseits über das «Klaviertrio in d-Moll», das sie angefangen hat. Das Echo auf Felix’ Klaviertrio, ebenfalls in d-Moll, bleibt vorerst ein Geheimnis, dafür schockiert sie ihren Bruder im August 1846 mit der Nachricht «herauszugeben»: ihre «Gartenlieder op. 3».

Fanny bricht den Bann, wissend, dass es Felix «nicht recht ist». Schande hoffe sie damit nicht zu machen, da sie keine «femme libre» sei, keine Hure. Der «Rabenbruder» lenkt ein und erteilt ihr seinen «Handwerkssegen».

Mit dieser Geste der Versöhnung beginnt sich der Lebenskreis zu schliessen. Im Mai 1847 stirbt Fanny an den Folgen eines Gehirnschlags, im November folgt ihr Felix auf gleiche Weise. In der Todesart vereint, enden zwei fiebrige Leben.
