Suguru Ito, born in Japan, gave his first concerts aged 11 in the USA, New Zealand and Australia. From the 1990s based in Switzerland, he has played numerous recitals, chamber music and solo concertos both on the modern piano and on period pianofortes including William Stodart (London 1799), Nannette Streicher née Stein (Vienna 1816), Johann Baptist Streicher (Vienna 1842), Sébastien & Pierre Érard (Paris 1857) and Grotrian Steinweg (Braunschweig 1874).

He has performed together with Dimitri Ashkenazy, Cecilia Bartoli, François Benda, Margo Cadias, Graziella Contratto, Patrick Demenga, Yoko Fujita, Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Michio Kai, Ivan Monighetti, Emmanuel Pahud, Alfredo Persichilli, Alice Piérot, Hartmut Rohde, Emil Rovner, Midori Seiler, Kurt Widmer, Helmut Winschermann & the Deutsche Bachsolisten, the Cuarteto Casals, et al. Occasionally he has also been heard in crossover projects, e.g., with writer Mikhail Shishkin and actor Thomas Douglas.

Diverse engagements and tours have brought him to notable venues including the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Sydney Opera House, Hamilton’s Founders Theatre, Salle UNESCO Paris, Beethoven-House in Bonn, Bach-Archiv in Leipzig, SWR Hans Rosbaud Studio in Baden-Baden, Granitz Hunting Castle on the island Ruegen, Tonhalle Zürich, Paul Klee Centre in Berne, the Actors’ Church - St Paul's Covent Garden, Wall Hall in Hertfordshire, Barcelona’s Auditorium, Ginza Oji-Hall in Tokyo and the Odd Fellows Lodge, among others.

Suguru Ito also appeared at international festivals and concert series, such as Lucerne Festival, Temporada de Cambra de Barcelona, Bodenseefestival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Renaissance de l’Orgue à Bordeaux, Les Heures de Musique de La Chaux-de-Fonds, Concerts for ≪Embracing the World®︎≫, Société Chopin, International Joseph Martin Kraus Society, Recital Cycle @ Chamber Symphony Basel, Festival ≪Pau Casals≫ in El Vendrell and Gidon Kremer’s Festival les muséiques.

Additionally, despite his critical stance towards CD productions, Suguru Ito has appeared through his preferred live concert recordings on various broadcasts, including Netherlands Radio 4 (Dvorák’s Piano Quintet with the Cuarteto Casals), Catalunya Ràdio (Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio Op. 50 with Abel Tomàs and Arnau Tomàs), DBC Radio TV (Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 Op. 35 @ Concert for Japan Tsunami Earthquake Relief), Radio România Muzical (chamber music), Radio SRF 2 Kultur (piano recitals) etc.

Suguru Ito's other passion from the late 1970s until 2019 was playing the melodica. In 2003 he was invited to the Russian Festival “Pictures from an Exhibition" in Nizhny Novgorod and to the concert cycle “New Horizons Berne” to perform the premiere of his own melodica version of György Ligeti’s Musica ricercata, in celebration of composer’s 80th birthday.

He studied economics, literature and music. In 1993 he was awarded a soloist diploma at the Basel Academy of Music under Jürg Wyttenbach, a disciple of Yvonne Lefébure. Highly inspiring encounters with Shinichi Suzuki, Mstislav Rostropovich, Sándor Zöldy (Quatuor Végh), Kurt Widmer or his studies with Haruko Kataoka, Masaru Kawasaki, Andreas Staier, Christopher Schmidt (Gregorian chant at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis), Johann Sonnleitner and complementary lectures in cultural philosophy given by Hans Saner have significantly shaped him.

10代半ばでヘルムート・ヴィンシャーマン率いるドイツ・バッハ・ゾリステンとモーツァルトのピアノ協奏曲を弾いてデビュー。18世紀の縦笛と横笛を学ぶ傍ら、信州大学経済学部とスコラ・カントルム・バジリエンシス中退を経て、バーゼル音楽院大学院ピアノ科修了。1990年代からスイスを拠点とし、モダンピアノのみならず、数々のオリジナル・ピリオド楽器 〜 William Stodart (London 1799), Michael Rosenberger (Vienna 1800), Nannette Streicher née Stein (Vienna 1816), Johann Baptist Streicher (Vienna 1842), Sébastien & Pierre Érard (Paris 1857), Julius Blüthner (Leipzig 1874), Carl Bechstein (Berlin 1878), Steinway & Sons (NY 1899) etc. 〜 によるピアノリサイタル、オーケストラとの協演のほか、室内楽の分野でも多くの名手たち (ディミトリ・アシュケナージ、チェチーリア・バルトリ、エマニュエル・パユ、パトリック・デメンガ、藤田容子、ハルトムート・ローデ、イヴァン・モニゲッティ、マルゴ・カディアス、甲斐道雄、フランソワ・ベンダ、エミール・ロヴナー、スカラ座首席チェリストのアルフレード・ペルスィキッリ、ルーヴル宮音楽隊コンミスのアリス・ピエロ、カザルス弦楽四重奏団ほか) のパートナーを務めている。

数多くの国際音楽祭やコンサート・シリーズ、アンサンブル・プロジェクトに招かれ、フィラデルフィア、シドニー・オペラ座、ボン・ベートーヴェン・ハウス、ライプツィヒ・バッハ資料財団、メクレンブルク=フォアポンメルン音楽祭、国際ヨーゼフ・マルティン・クラウス協会、ルツェルン音楽祭、チューリヒ・トーンハレ、ベルン・パウルクレー・センター、ボーデンゼー音楽祭、オッド・フェローズ結社、銀座・王子ホール、福島・なまず亭、ロンドン・コヴェントガーデン・聖ポール堂 (“俳優たちの教会”)、パリ・ユネスコ、ミュゼ・デュ・ルーヴル、ボルドー・アキテーヌ美術館、バルセロナ・オーディトリアム、パウ・カザルス音楽祭 (スペイン)、ギドン・クレーメルが音楽監督を務めたフェスティヴァル・レ・ミュゼイク等で客演。現代音楽にも力を注ぎ、ヴィトルト・ルトスワフスキやフランギス・アリ＝ザデーなど作曲家立ち会いのもとにさまざまなコンサートや初演を試みてきた。

CD録音に対しては懐疑的なスタンスを貫いてきたが、実況録音を通して数多くのラジオ放送に出演している。
チャイコフスキー: ピアノトリオ『偉大な芸術家の思い出』@ ラジオ・カタルーニャ、ドヴォルザーク: ピアノ五重奏曲第2番 @ ネザーランド・ラジオ、ショパン: ピアノソナタ第2番 『葬送』 〜 東日本大震災復興支援コンサート @ DBC ラジオ・テレビジョン 、リサイタル (リスト、リゲティ、ドビュッシー、武満徹) @ ラジオ SRF2、室内楽ライヴ @ ラジオ・ルーマニア etc.

また、これまでにアイナール・ステーン＝ノックレベルク、ユリアンナ・アヴデーエワ、ヴァディム・チャイモヴィッチなどのピアニストたちのリサイタルや室内楽での代演も行なっている。

1970年代後半から2019年にかけて演奏しつづけてきた余技の鍵盤ハーモニカでは、2003年にスイスとロシア・ニジニノヴゴロド (旧ソ連ゴーリキー) の現代音楽週間において、リゲティのピアノ曲集『ムジカ・リチェルカータ』のメロディカ版を世界初演した。

片岡ハルコ、アンドレアス・シュタイアー、ユルク・ヴィッテンバッハ、川崎優の各氏に師事。ムスティスラフ・ロストロポーヴィチ、シャンドール・ゾルディ (ヴェーク弦楽四重奏団) 諸氏との邂逅や哲学者ハンス・ザーナー氏の文化哲学講義からはとりわけ深い影響を受けている。
